The AFR is a new national research grant scheme to support PhD and postdoctoral research training in Luxembourg and abroad. It has arisen from a reform of the well-established BFR “Bourse Formation-Recherche” fellowship scheme, which has come to a close at the end of September 2008. From the 1st October 2008 onwards, the law on the AFR “Aides à la Formation-Recherche” (AFR) has come into force. The new AFR scheme is managed by the Fonds National de la Recherche.
Under the AFR scheme, the research grants for PhDs are awarded for a period of up to 3 years; a 4th year prolongation may be awarded under justified circumstances.
The AFR postdoc grants are awarded for a maximum duration of 2 years.
The AFR programme has no thematic limitations and is open to all researchers, regardless of their nationality, desirous to engage into research training in Luxembourg or abroad. In the selection process, the interest of the project in the context of Luxembourg R&D will nevertheless be evaluated.
The candidates are the principal authors of the project proposal and it is their responsibility to find a suitable host institution with a competent research group in their field.
Applicants for the AFR PhD grants must be holders of a University degree of a recognized public or private Higher Education Institution, allowing them to enter into doctoral training.
Applicants for the AFR postdoc grants must be holders of a PhD diploma of a recognized public or private Higher Education Institution.
Postdoctoral candidates can apply until up to 8 years after reception of their PhD certificate (the date of the deadline counts). Furthermore, in order to be eligible as a postdoc, the research training has to be carried out in a different country from where the applicant has been principally (> 12 months) working in the 24 months preceding the beginning of the intended postdoctoral funding period. These two eligibility conditions are binding, without exception.
