2012 Writer’s Workshop
RISC Consortium Working Group on “Comparative Border and Migration Politics"
Luxembourg, June 21-22, 2012

The Consortium for Comparative Research on Regional Integration and Social Cohesion’s (RISC) Working Group on “Comparative Border and Migration Politics is pleased to open a call for papers for its 2012 writer’s workshop. The purpose of this workshop is to provide extensive feedback to selected authors on specific articles before they submit them for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Authors writing on any subject related to border or migration studies are welcome to submit applications. Articles can be written in English, French or Spanish. All selected participants must acknowledge support from the RISC Consortium in the publication in which their article appears. Submissions can be submitted to RISC’s journal, Region’s & Cohesion but this is not a requirement.

The workshop will be held in Luxembourg on June 21-22, 2012. Selected participants will receive accommodation and meals. International travel can be provided only to selected scholars affiliated with RISC member institutes.

The project will follow three phases. First, interested participants should electronically submit an application to Harlan.koff@uni.lu by February 1, 2012 including:

·         name,
·         institutional affiliation,
·         article title,
·         a short abstract (250 words), and
·         title of the journal to which the article is to be sent.

The workshop conveners will then select a group of 3-5 scholars (depending on costs) for the seminar. In phase 2 of the initiative, scholars will send their articles to all workshop participants one month before the seminar. The purpose of the seminar is for each participant to read all of the articles thoroughly and come prepared to discuss the pieces with the conveners. Upon their arrival to the seminar, authors will receive written reviews of their work. Comments will be made concerning: originality of research question, clarity of argument, methodology, conceptualization, embeddedness in contemporary literature, and appropriateness of journal where the publication is to appear. Finally, in part three of the initiative authors are expected to once again circulate their revised articles one month following the completion of the seminar. These revisions will receive comments from conference participants so that articles can be submitted to international, peer-reviewed journals. The pieces will be placed on the working group’s web site on the RISC Consortium portal as “working papers”
